Rest On The Flight Into Egypt
A1
An Italian oil on canvas 20" x 11.75", (1581 - 1641) by a follower of Domenichino. A Baroque painter of the Bolognese school, or Carracci school of painters. He studied under Denis Calvaert, until they quarreled. He then went to the Accademia degli Incamminati of the Carracci where he acquired the nickname Domenichino, meaning little Domenico. He left Bologna for Rome in 1602 and became recognized as one of the most talented apprentices of Annibale Carracci. He lived with his slightly older Bolognese colleagues Albani and Guido Reni, and worked along side Lanfranco, who would later become his chief rival.
From the estate of B. M. Greene of Toronto, Canada. This was widely exhibited in Canada, and has alternately been attributed to Domenichino and a follower of Domenichino.
